Project Overview

The Mens, Manus, Machina (M3S) Interdisciplinary Research Group (IRG) at the

Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART) is seeking a

motivated Master’s Student Intern to contribute to research on tactile sensor

design for soft robotic systems.

The project aims to develop novel tactile sensing modules for compliant robotic

structures that enable soft manipulators to perceive and interact with complex

objects safely and adaptively.

Key Responsibilities

1) Design and prototype tactile sensors suitable for soft and flexible robotic components.

2) Explore various sensing modalities such as capacitive, piezoresistive, optical, or magnetic-based tactile sensing.

3) Integrate tactile sensors into soft robotic manipulators and evaluate their performance.

4) Conduct experiments to characterize sensor performance (e.g., sensitivity, linearity, hysteresis, durability).

5) Develop signal conditioning and data processing algorithms to interpret tactile feedback.

6) Assist in data analysis, documentation, and preparation of research reports or manuscripts.

7) Participate in team discussions, lab meetings, and technical presentations

Requirements

1) Currently enrolled in a full-time Master’s program at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

2) Background in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Robotics, or related disciplines.

3) Strong interest and experience in sensor design, soft materials, or robotic hardware development.

4) Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360) and handson prototyping (3D printing, silicone molding, or laser cutting).

5) Familiarity with microcontroller programming (Arduino, STM32, or Raspberry Pi) and basic circuit design.

6) Knowledge of signal processing and data analysis using MATLAB or Python is advantageous.

7) Good teamwork, communication, and documentation skills.

The internship must be approved by the University.
