Project Overview

Love forests and looking for an adventure?

Come work with us on our mission to fight climate change and regional smoke haze at our field site in Borneo!  Wake up to the strange and fantastic sound of birds and insects, trek through a forest full of undescribed wonders, and look out over the top of one of the last undisturbed peat forests in Southeast Asia.  We are seeking two enthusiastic field technician to work with us to install and maintain environmental sensors on our 65 m instrumentation tower in Brunei. Work will involve two- to three-week trips to Brunei every 1-2 months to install, check and maintain sensors. We will consider applicants with a range of backgrounds, from electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or biology to construction: the most important criteria are motivation, enthusiasm, and a love of the outdoors.

Job Description

  1. Two- to three-week trips to Brunei every 1-2 months to install, check and maintain sensors on forest instrumentation tower.
  2. Work with Research Scientist to plan instrument maintenance.
  3. Coordination of travel and field work with Research Scientist.
  4. Learn basics of forest sensor and datalogger use to retrieve data and perform quality checks.
  5. Opportunity to learn about forest carbon and greenhouse gas exchange measurements and data analysis, as desired.

Job Requirements

  • Polytechnic or Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, ecology, or related discipline.
  • Physical fitness to hike 2-5 km in jungle terrain and climb 65 m instrumentation tower.
  • Working-at-height training will be provided.
  • Ability to swim is a plus.
  • Fluency in Malay or Indonesian is a plus.
